Assoc. Prof. Bobby John MBBS, MD, DM, PhD, FRACP, FACC , FHRS, FRCP(G), Cardiologist & Electrophysiologist

Dr Bobby John is a Consultant Cardiologist and Senior Staff Specialist at The Townsville University Hospital with over two decades of experience in Cardiology and has been a Cardiac Electrophysiologist since 2004. He graduated from Christian Medical College, Vellore, a renowned quaternary teaching Hospital in India started by Dr Ida Scudder, an American missionary in 1900.  He was on the faculty of CMC and was heading the Electrophysiology unit before making a move to Australia.

 Dr John is academically oriented and was ranked among the top 5 of his graduating class. His interest in Cardiac Electrophysiology was spurred on by one of Dr Hein Wellens’ disciples, Dr Lokhandwala. Further to that he pursued a PhD programme at the University of Adelaide in 2006 Studying arrhythmias in Rheumatic Heart disease; a relevant problem in India and among the indigenous population in Australia. Dr John was acknowledged for his work with the Young Investigator Award in two consecutive years by the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society.  He completed advanced training in Cardiac Electrophysiology during his tenure at Royal Adelaide Hospital from 2006 to 2009 under the tutelage of Professor Sanders.

Dr John has published over 150 abstracts and 40 original papers. He continues to pursue his research interest at Townville University Hospital and is currently involved in various projects. He has been on various subcommittees of the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society. He holds a number of Fellowships of prestigious societies; being Heart Rhythm Society of North America; American College of Cardiology and Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow.

Dr John pursues his academic interest by holding an Associate Professorship at James Cook University. He has been actively involved in mentorship programs and teaching advanced trainees, residents and interns.

Dr. John has special interest in cardiac electrophysiology. He performs implantation of various devices such as permanent pacemaker, conduction system pacing, cardiac defibrillators, subcutaneous defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization device. He has keen interest in performing atrial fibrillation ablation using Cryoballoon technology. He also does ablation of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia. Outside of this, he continues to practise general cardiology including coronary angiography, trans-esophageal echocardiogram and DC cardioversion of arrhythmias. He is kind, empathetic and known to be thorough in his investigations and a meticulous clinician.

Dr John provides consultations from the rooms in Suite 103 Mater Medical Centre where he also performs routine interrogation of cardiac implanted devices and other cardiac diagnostic services such as echocardiography and Holter (ambulatory ECG monitoring). If further hospital-based management is required, he can perform procedures at both Townsville University Hospital and the Mater Private Hospital in Pimlico.

Bobby enjoys swimming and cycling and is married with two adult children. He has grown to love the pace of life in Townsville and the friendly people.
